There are a few reasons a wife may want to keep her maiden name when she marries. It may be because her maiden name is unique and rare and she wants to keep that last name. It may be that her maiden name is easier for her to use, especially if her husband's name is longer than her own or more difficult to pronounce. It may be that she doesn't feel that she needs to lose part of her identity just to be married.

If you are talking about Asian culture, I had an Asian lady tell me that she is a blood descendant from her father not her husband. This is why she keeps her father's name.
In the Western culture women do it for a variety of reasons. If they have a high profile career, their maiden name is what (potential) clients know. Some believe in equal rights: a man doesn't change his surname so why should she? Finally, I know of one lady who said to me "You always know who the mother of a the baby is because you see her pregnant but you do not necessarily know who the father is." Therefore, some also believe in surnames being maternal rather then paternal.

Many women in today's society are getting married later than in past generations. By the time they marry, they have earned post graduate degrees and are well established in a career. It's easier to keep their maiden name than to go through all the paperwork, etc. to change their surname.
