Some people should not open their mouths to answer, as their feet just fly right in there! Let's break down the numbers.
295 is the WIDTH in mm, 265 is then the narrower of the 2
50 is the aspect ratio, in this case the sidewall height is 50% of the width. So the 295/50 would be a slightly taller tyre than the 265/50.
r stands for radial
15 is the wheel size, in inches.

The 295 is wider the measurement is the first number is the width in millimeters the second number is the sidewall height in relation to the width. the third number is the wheel size it will fit. For example a 295/50/15 is 295 mm wide the height is 50% of the width and it fits a 15 inch wheel.

If I am correct they are both the same width.I beleive the first numbers on a tire states the height of the tire not the width.You should check with your local tire store to be certain though.
