A lot of girls and women feel this way because girls and women are made to feel their genitals and periods are dirty - it is all in your mind, you think of periods as dirty so you feel dirty, as long as you are clean and change your pads often there is no reason to feel dirty.

It has been this way for a very long time, in certain places people thought if you stood next to a woman who was on her period it was bad luck, some people used to think menstruation was a curse, but now people know better and we are getting back to a time when menstruation is celebrated and praised.

We unfortunately still have a lot of negative taboos and ideas about menstruation, and a lot of people still use these negative ideas as a way to make money or control girls and women – your thinking you are dirty on your period is all totally in your mind, so if you have an idea that your period is dirty then it will always seem that way to you.

It is only menstrual blood, almost every woman on this planet of a certain age has periods, it is how we are able to have children, it is a good thing, not something that is bad.

Commercial menstrual product manufacturers are very good at making girls like yourself feel bad about their bodies and feel as though menstruation is dirty as a way to keep you buying your products. Take the very pads you are using, these are pads that are bleached whiter-than-white for no reason other than to make girls and women think they need whiter-than-white pads to deal with their periods, implying periods are dirty, and they include wipes implying again that periods are dirty.

It is good that you do not want to use tampons as tampons are far more unhygienic than pads because they hold decomposing blood inside your vagina where bacteria multiply within the blood and vagina, this is why tampons are linked with TSS and vaginal infections.

If you do ever decide to try using internal menstrual options you might want to try softcups or menstrual cups instead because these are far better than tampons as well as far cleaner with less change of leaking, less messy and won't cause any smell.

Consider switching to a different type of pads, your vagina is self-cleaning meaning that it cleans itself, anything chemical around your vagina or vulva will affect the pH so change the balance of good and bad bacteria it can also irritate your mucosa (skin) – wipes are totally unnecessary and commercial pads are bad for your vaginal health, both can cause infections like thrush and bacterial vaginosis, these can make you smell and give you excessive discharge so will make you feel even more dirty.

Look at safer options such as organic pads like Natracare, cloth pads like Gladrags, padded panties like Lunapanties or make your own pads, these are not only safer but will help you feel cleaner because they will prevent vaginal infections and they let air get to your vulva (external part of your genitals) keeping you dry and cool, where as commercial pads like Always are made from synthetics that keep air out making your genitals hot and moist.

It does get easier as you get older and more used to your periods and stop thinking like most young girls do along the lines of 'ew periods are gross!!', lol, but it is up to you to realise that you are being made to think your periods are dirty/smelly/gross – here is a surprisingly well-known secret you need to recognise before you will stop feeling uncomfortable about your period and stop feeling dirty;

THERE IS NOTHING DIRTY OR GROSS ABOUT YOUR PERIOD!

I would strongly recommend you take a look at some of these sites;

These are sites about your body and also some sites written by menstrual activists about how they appreciate their period.

Until you can appreciate your period you will always suffer your periods because you'll always be stuck with this mental idea that periods are bad when they are not, you need to change your mind-set and learn how to care better for your body or else you'll always feel this way and you'll always suffer your periods.

Periods are only as good or as bad as you make them.

You'll just have to get use to it. :( Periods are gross and dirty. change your pad often and clean often... that's really all you can do. From my past experience, Always Ultra Thins are the best. They don't weigh you down like a big pillow between your legs, but they work quite well. Also, I would go to the 99 cent store and buy a packet of baby wipes to keep myself clean while on the go. :)
Tampons are truly cleaner though. So, if you want to have cleaner periods, I would really consider using tampons. :)

Try a different type of pads like stayfree dry max and just experiment with tampons cause you will eventually have to go swimmng during your period

The only way for me to feel cleaner is to use tampons.

Trust me, most women feel yucky at that time of the month.
