Amsterdam is fine most times except very late fall and the winter. My suggestion is mid April to late May, because the most dramatic sight in Holland are the acres and acres of tulips that bloom during that time. As Holland is a small country, you can easily do a day excursion from A'dam.

I would like to discover and partake of Tulipomania on bicycle. I would arrive in Holland as early in May as my schedule permits. I would carry my belongings with me, keep a raincoat on my back, and experience Tulipomania at its height. "The tulip trail" would take me on a bike tour around the bulb fields of Western Holland, incorporating the Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht, and smaller towns like Haarlem, Leiden and Delft."

Summer's nice but I love it when winter's cold enough for the canals are frozen. You can't go on boat rides then but it really adds to the particularities of a city built on water.
Any season, it's worth visiting, just go!
