could that be perceived as racism by some to have the all inclusive "white" and then "african american","asian american", "mexican american", etc. doesn't that imply a "white" and "nonwhite" attitude in America?

No, i think the question should be removed entirely, but listing ever nationality would be another legitimate option, Yahoo does it, are they more advanced, or better funded than our government?

The government(s) are about the only people who can legally ask that on a form they basically make you fill out in order to get some privilege from them.

On a driver's license it makes absolutely no sense because it has your picture on it to begin with.

and the answers are supposed to be voluntary, and only used for research.

I am often confronted with these things. My father was Scots, French and Cherokee and my mother Irish.

Since Scots and Irish are a subset of the "white" race called Celtic, and French are "white" latin, and Cherokee "native American" race, what does somebody who is born BETWEEN races put?

Race: Human.

It's voluntary to answer it anyway, right?

Give some government pollster sitting in his darkened cubicle sorting these things and doing the Data Entry something to think about.

No way?? What are you sniffing? German's are too closely related to the American government for eons, why should there be any box of race at all? I think they are too lazy to reprint new apps. And it is costly as well. I think that applications today are repulsive when they reprinted to accomodate the hispanics?
There should not be any accomodating at all for anyone but an American. Just put a box there that says American or what country are you from and proof of visa and that is it. We are so liberal here to the immigrant it is crazy, and my friends from Germany agree but then they would now wouldn't they? Their answer to me is with laughter and the also want to know why we are so free to give a foreigner Social Security even if they go back to their own country the check keeps going there? Germany doesn't do that nor does any of the other countries. In that way we are stupid morons.

If the DMV broke the racial categories down into every possible combination, the form would be 50 pages long. For example Asians would have to check either Chinese American, Japanese American, Nepalese American, etc, etc, etc. Eurpoeans would have to check either German American, Irish American, Swedish American, etc, etc.

No, it's not racist. It's just a timesaver. Just check the white or caucausian box and go on your merry way.

Whether or not you consider it racism is your own opinion. It should be pointed out however that they are probably asking as a way of identifying you (as somebody of German descent, you don't look all that different from somebody of Irish or Italian descent, but you do look different from somebody who is Asian). Also, if they were to specify different types of Caucasians, they would have to specify every single type of African descent, Asian descent, Hispanic descent, etc..., making the list hundreds of entries long. Finally, not everybody knows their descent, and it would be very hard for some to go beyond the color of their skin. So, I don't believe it's racism. If you do, that is entirely within you rights to do and you should feel free to complain to the DMV about it. Just ask yourself, were you actually offended, or are you simply curious?

So, you think we should have a form that rolls out like a scroll to list all ethnic possibilities?

Ethiopian-American
Scottish-American
Canadian-American
Autrailian-American,....OMG, please!
They took the most common ethnicities found in America, go to another country and I guarantee you their forms won't include German-American.

the government is big on keeping racism and bigotry alive. it keeps the people from worrying about what them and the rich are doing. if we are fighting among ourselves,we leave them alone

i used to check the box for other and fill in human for race. they took that option away on some forms.
