OK if you put it in D , you will take off in 1st ,shift to 2nd ,then to drive. this is for normal everyday driving.
if you put it in 2 ,it will take off in 2nd gear ,this is for reduced traction situations , such as mud, snow , sand ,ice ,etc. less tire spin. you can also downshift into 2nd to slow on hills and reduce heat and wear on brakes .
if you put it in 1 , it will take off in 1st and stay there . this is for hills and pulling loads

I am assuming the transmission shifter you are looking at has the following stops P(Park) R(Reverse) N(Neutral) D(Drive) 2(2nd Gear), 1(first gear). If this is the case, you have a 3-speed automatic transmission. When the shift lever is in D, the car will start out in first gear, and when necessary (as speed increases), the car will shift to second, and finally to third. When the shifter is set on 2(second) the transmission will not shift into third gear, and when set to 1, it will stay in first gear, regardless of engine speed. Locking the vehicle into a lower gear (other than D) comes in handy when driving downhill (such as on a mountain road), to control the speed of the vehicle, allowing the transmission to hold down the speed of the vehicle.

With an automatic transmission car the car obviously switches gears on its own.

By placing the car in 1 and 2 it allows you to switch the gears so when you need a little extra power for climing that hill etc. You can stay in the low gear until you are ready to leave them.

D or overdrive allows your vehicle's transmission to shift automatically through all gears. While placing the transmission in 2nd gear limits the vehicle to 1st and 2nd gear only. And placing the transmission in 1st gear limits the vehicle to only 1st gear.

on your basic transmission without overdrive 1st and 2nd are different ratios to start out in manually. putting it in D makes it easier to drive and if trans is working properly it will automatically shift to 1st for 1st gear start at stop light or stop sign.

1st and second gear hold it into that gear only.
D is either both 3rd and 4th or 3rd only with and Overdrive button somewhere thats 4th.

1st and second is good for pulling steep hills, or slowing down in emergencys. Drive a manual then you'll totally understand it.
When i drove my auto in the snow, i used a lower gear so i could keep traction because i didnt have 4WD or AWD.

Those low gears are for situations like going up a slippery hill.

they multiply the available torque to assist you to take off from a light or give you more power to pass another car. They change the final drive ratio. That is, the number of revolutions your engine must turn to get the rear wheels to make one revolution.
