Flip flops? I dunno. Personally, I don't think they are very formal, but I'm not in school any more.

What about a nice strappy sandel?

"Flip flops" and "formal" don't go together in one sentence. Flip-flops is casual style, no matter how pretty they are. You can wear strappy shoes like people say, but if you really want to be formal - your shoes supposed to have closed ancles (open toes are OK) and preferrably heels if you are an adult. You can go less formal by choosing low heel or strappy shoes. But flip-flops should be totally out of the question.

Somebody said people take their shoes off anyway - well no you don't, not at a formal event. If your feet hurt you stop dancing, that's how it is.

It really depends on your reason for wanting to wear flip flops. If you are worried about standing out and having people make comments, then I would advise you not to wear flip flops. However, if you are a confident individual who doesn't mind some extra attention and really wants to be comfortable and/or different and/or maintain the lowest height possible because your date is shorter than you if you wore heels, then GO FOR IT! I personally value individuality and like pushing people's buttons, making them think and getting their attention. People wear Chuck's to their dances, so why not flip flops? Being different is fun!!!! =)

Flip flops have no place at a formal dance. Wear them and you will stick out like an infected pimple on a big nose. People will laugh at you behind your back.

i'd bypass with the ballet residences. those are the most versatile because they are informal, yet more suitable formal for a dance than turn flops or communicate. also, like the turn flops you are able to kick them off to bop in case you want to and nevertheless exhibit your cool matching feet.
