I'm thinking of buying a new computer. I do alot of work with adobe photoshop other than that just surf the net. I currently have a dell with no problems just need to upgrade to a newer model. Should I get another dell or what about emachine.

if your current computer is doing the job why consider buying a new one?
unless you are about to start editing video i'd suggest you stick with what you have until at the earliest the latter half of this year.
alternatively try using a site like www.dabs.com to do a wish list of your IDEAL computer.
or just upgrade the computer you have buy new internal compnents such as new motherboard, CPU, GPU, RAM, PSU waybe a new LARGE capacity hard drive for internal use and a large capacity external drive for back up purposes.
if you do buy new compnents insist on the best. and the best hard drive brand is seagate, kingston and crucial are excellent RAM brands, and as for your CPU that comes down to your choice if you need a stable system that is up at least 90% of the year then an AMD CPU is the wayu to go.
If you want a system that is down more times than it is up (due to errors) then intel chips are for you.
for your digital media needs i'd recomend a 64 bit processor.
as for the ram that should be the maximum your system and operating software can handle. xp home is 3GB, xp pro 4GB (i seem to recall).
you can transfer your existing software licvences to your new system if you are scrapping the old system
good luck.
i've heard lenovo are not bad systems. but if i were you, use the dabs site to research your perfect system, then either buy and build the computer yourself, or contact a store or online retailer that can build the system for you. however the cost could be parts+ labour (assembly) charge, which could be upwards of £100 per computer to assemble and install your software.

As one said, why not upgrade the system you have now? Upgrading to 1gb memory might do the trick. It's according to how it performs now, what you have, and if a newer computer will make any difference or not. Surfing the net, no difference at all. Photoshop, it's according to what you are doing and how large the files/pics are. Mostly no change in speed, unless doing automations. And for large pics, more memory will speed it up, not a newer computer.

Programs like Photoshop are extremely memory-intensive. An ideal computer to sustain such a program would require far more than 512mb of memory. I recommend no less than 1gig memory. And because were talking visuals here, make sure it has a decent graphics card. Make sure the processor is Pentium Duo Core and no less. Also, it produces media files with extensions like .jpg and those take up lots of room on your harddrive even after compression. Get no less than 80 gigs of storage on your computer. If you get a machine with lesser specs, you're gonna get a computer that constantly crashes on you (learned from experience) Always buy a machine that will keep up with you. Alienware computers is good for these programs.
