I'm really glad, too, that you aren't into escalating the thing. Then you stress yourself out trying to be cleverer and cleverer, and you might hurt someone's feelings.

If Someone makes fun of you maliciously (they want to hurt you), they don't deserve a response. Leave 'em standing, and avoid them.

If s/he makes fun of you because s/he is caught up with his/her own sense of humor (and sometimes it's funny), smile and say, "I don't know what to say."

If s/he makes fun of you in a nice, teasing manner, act like it's a compliment and say sincerely, "Why thank you!" or "That's the nicest thing anyone's said to me all day!" Or something similar.

If you think s/he isn't aware of how rude his/her comment is, ask. "Do you really mean that?" (in a concerned and caring voice).

Whatever it is, don't buy into it and start feeling down on yourself. It's really that person's problem -- his or her need to judge or be seen as a funny person.

Very glad to see that you want to do this without being mean or embarrassing. That leaves being funny. And to be funny without being mean or embarrassing means being willing to be the brunt of your own joke. This is hard for some people, but will score you points for being self-assured and mature, as long as you don't take it too far. To achieve this, like all other things, study. Find some footage of some of the greats in this department. I recommend Johnny Carson (host before Jay Leno). Watch how he does it, the things he keys into, and how he keeps his guests looking good without being "poor me"
Then, practice. Picture yourself in thise situations and see yourself pulling off a great one liner with perfect timing and poise. See the people around you laughing - WITH you. You'll be a hit!

The best thing to do is to ignore the people that make fun of you. They aren't worth your time. If you are hurt by what they say, don't let it show. If they see that they can hurt you then they have power over you. Don't give them that power.

Come on, don't say those things about yourself. Your not that bad. I'm sorry, I wasn't listening. Where you talking to me? What's that you said? Was that what you call funny? You are try to hard.

Some people are just jerks.

Look at it this way, they wouldn't be picking on you if they weren't envious of you. The one's who tease and say rude things are the one's with self esteem problems. If people are picking on you, it's because they have problems of their own. It has nothing to do with you!

it would be easier if you'd given an example. The best thing to do is to ignore them, to make them think that it doesn't bother you. failing that sarcasm, mockingly agreeing with them can be very belittling for them which takes their power away from them. But the best thing to do is to not let them bother you.
