I accidentally turned my iPod nano on full volume, and I'm wondering if this is why one of the earbuds doesn't work anymore. Is this a possibility?

*they were not in my ears at the time

No. Honestly, the iBuds are pretty cheap and prone to failures just like the one you are describing here.

I would get the iBuds replaced under warranty, then just toss them in the box and forget about them, and go out and buy a decent set of earphones.

Despite that many people do it, you should never run any device (audio or not) at maximum, especially on start up or for any length of time.

The optimum volume for any audio device is 75% - 85%, and you always want to start at minimum volume and increase it once the device is started.

This is standard industry practice.

That said, John who answered above is correct. if they are still under warranty, get the headset replaced.

Yes they can be but one full blast shouldn't wreck them! return them to your nearest apple store for a different pair!
