[Ar] 4s1 3d5 is its most stable ground state for chromium -- remember, a half filled s-shell with a half filled d-shell is more stable than a filled s-shell with a 4/10 filled d-shell. There is a special stability to the half filled d-shell configuration. This is a common trick question on a chemistry test, so remember this rule exception!!
