(this is for a novel i'm writing)

say you are 17-years old and your father runs over a guy. your father flees from the scene because he does not want to get into trouble. the man he hit dies. your father is captured in a week. basically he is a criminal. but you are in high school. you dont really want anyone to know that your dad is a criminal (even tho must people must have already read it in the papers, some might not notice). Are you allowed to register to the school with a different last name? (and.. would you be forced to move to another area?)

I would hope the school that you already attend. These are people you care about you . There is nothing to be ashamed of every one make mistakes. Even fathers.
As far as going by another name in another school . You can do that by using it as a AKA.beside you'll real name but I would hope you wouldn't change schools. These are problem as adults we all face from time to time. Go see your Guidance counselor she will get you a very good therapist.
Therapy isn't what you think it maybe for one thing the therapist is always on your side no one else. Say what's ever on your mind no one will ever know what has been said. She will give you coping skills. Without those skills you will just lay in you bed with the pillow over your head dreading going back to school.
Go back with your head up straight and if anyone says one word about your father which they won't because they don't know what to say. Help them along because it's always better when you give of your self to others. Volunteer at anything that is positive. You will be alright in time. Believe in yourself !!!!
As far as you father is concerned. If this is his first offense. He'll more than likely get a light sentence and the crime will not be murder it be manslaughter. He had know intent to do any harm. Remember that word INTENT. Use it often when you go to see him.

First of all you are a minor and can't register in a different name without parental consent or you are adopted and your name is changed legally through the Courts. Your peers can be the harshest people to deal with but some how you deal with it. We all went through high school and the tribulations that are attributed to it but we survived. No one can force you to do anything that you don't want to unless, again, it is Court Ordered.

At 17 you are almost an adult but not quite there yet. Believe me, if I knew than what I know now, I would have directed my life down a different path and would have been an attorney by now. I would have not waited until the age that I am now to finish school.

Good luck with your novel.

I dont think that you can change youre name until you are 18. I dont know about using another name and I dont think that you would be forced to move to another area but no matter where you go the secret will come out sooner or later.

yes, you can. a girl I went to school did the same thing. she started using her mothers maiden name. just talk to someone at your school, and explain why you want to do it.

No. You cannot legally change your name until you are 18.

I guess you could use an alias somehow.
