They find out by calling your former employer. While not all prospective new employers will follow up doing due-dilligence on your employment history, be warned that 100% will fire your rear-end and blacklist you if you lie on your resume.

Even if you do get in a job after lying, you are still not in the clear. I know of two people who were caught lying on their resume AFTER they got their job. Not only did they lose their job, but they lost their bonus and were basically ruined in the business. Remember, once your at a job, the world gets much smaller and people tend to know each other.

While many people embellish the truth, all out lying is not the way to go. While you want to do the best to market yourself in a good light, you don't want to go over the line. Yes, you want to get a job really badly - but don't screw up your future to get it.
