I don't mean a simple thankless task, but more of a good deed for the enrichment of society.

Yes. A few years ago I lived across the street from a church and I noticed that they had food kitchens for the homeless about once a week. I wanted to help out so I volunteered for their soup kitchen on Thanksgiving. We spent the entire morning serving the men and women who came in and then we prepared plates of food to be delivered to Senior Citizens and Group Homes. By the time I got to my family that night I was really tired but it felt awesome. Since then I've done soup kitchens with other churches and it's a rewarding way to spend your time.

I volunteered to work as a crisis counselor helping the recovery workers at the World Trade Center. I also volunteer at a local Criminal Domestic Violence Shelter. Oh, and I volunteer to drive little old people to doctor's appointments and to the grocery store. Any of these count?

Yes, I have, and I won't again. I don't expect gratitude, I don't expect woship, I do expect respect, and I do expect to be asked if I wish to continue, not to have it required of me. i.e., I did what I volunteered to do, a week later I get a call, giving me heck for not showing up 'again'. I volunteered for one time, they expected, and scheduled me, on an ongoing basis. I was clear at the time that it was once only, and they ignored that. The names that woman called me were totally out of line. She got fired over it, and I refused to go back, even to accept her apology, which was required of her by the director.
