Well fist of all when drawing a self portrait in pencil shading is really important if you want it to look real. I personally like the cartoon approach. To make it original try to do something interesting like you looking into a mirror. I don't know if this helps any but you didn't give me much to go on. If you want to look at my self portrait you can search Aimee Gordon on myspace and watch my slide. Good luck!

I have a solution to help. A lot of BIG-TIME art professor's might suggest that the best way to do a self portrait is to not use a mirror or a photograph, they won't be the real you the image in a mirror or a photograph is an opposite image of what someone else sees. If you really want to paint a portrait of you then paint the way you envision yourself. Or if you really want to put a psychological hitch to it paint an interpretation of yourself, for example paint a mood that your feeling or an emotion. Sometimes a specific color can self explain the artists feelings. Like Van Gogh, he had a period of yellows, then blues, greens and finally a brown period. This probably isn't quite want you your were hoping for, but usually your best artist have all had a color period at some point in their painting career. Good luck with finding the right answer and your portrait.

Get a big headshot picture of yourself 8x10 that is in good focus and draw a grid on it with PENCIL using a ruler. Then LIGHTLY draw a grid with the same number of squares on your sketchpad and start free handing using your picture as a guide. Each box that you are drawing should correspond with that same box of the photograph. Pencil is perfect because you can do shading and rubbing for the light smokey grey look. When you have done your outlining erase the lines on your sketchpad and start your shading. Good luck and keep practicing!

use a mirror draw the shape of your face lightly draw a light line like + to divide your face usually about halfway down your face itll look a little weird but once you add the hair it balances out draw your eyes leaving a space about the same size as the eyes in between and just go for it
take your time and draw lightly so you can fix your mistakes

All you need is a mirror or a photo. Well unless if you're asking "How can I draw better?" Practice makes perfect... It worked for me....PRACTICE!! You wont even need books and stuffs... Everybody has it's own way to get themselves better at something.. Try to experiment. Following guides from other people is just a 50% USEFUL.

Look in the mirror and draw what you see, you may also accentuate some aspects of your face to bring attention to the uniqueness of your face.

speaking in short, in case you desire to advance your drawing from mind's eye, you are able to desire to first alter the perceptions you have already got saved on your recommendations. it is to communicate, you are able to desire to be taught a thank you to attraction to a extra reasonable and anatomically spectacular eye than the attention you already can draw out of your mind's eye. That applies to each thing else you draw. employing books on anatomy and different references like magazines will truthfully help you throughout the time of this. Drawing self portrait is an incredible thank you to be taught facial anatomy. it relatively is going to coach you varieties paintings in 3 dimensions. haven't any confusion approximately effectiveness of employing references and books on anatomy. it is the only thank you to advance and refine what we already understand to attraction to and be taught something new which you cant draw. in case you will end employing references and proceed drawing purely out of your mind's eye your drawing will under no circumstances advance and additionally you will under no circumstances be waiting to develope new forms of drawing. This replaced right into a mistake i replaced into doing. as a results of fact i all started doing examine from paintings books and employing references, I relatively have stumbled on my paintings has dramatically more suitable. i could propose training drawing from anatomy and 'a thank you to' books. Draw from those books repeatedly lower back. this way you are able to alter your pre defined perceptions. and that's how all of us advance gradully as a results of fact adolescence- by potential of seeing and drawing. a number of the books i understand which would be useful for getting to grasp anatomy are: Drawing human head, Dynamic anatomy, Drawing dynamic palms, Dynamic wrinkles and draperies, Dynamic shadows by potential of BURNE HOGARTH.
