I have black friends and some of them feel the same. I can already hear the hate coming at me with this question. Why does America recognize MLK jrs birthday as a national holiday? Im all for his fights and his beliefs. We all have dreams and he gives people hope but both Lincoln and Washington had their birthdays recognized as national holidays until a couple decades ago until they combined them both and made presidents day. I just dont understand. Sorry If I offend anyone. : ) Nothing but love!

I am not originally from this country either. Thats why I was asking. And the only reason I acknowledged the fact that said friends were black was to point out that they had the same beliefs I did. Calm down with the cold dead fingers thing. : )

you're not racist... I don't believe you are ( and I'm black)
But racist people are bound to ask the same question that you just did hence, you risk being perceived as a racist.
The problem is that racist people have hijacked you race and normal people like you are victim to their hate and ignorance.
PS: didn't Washington have tonnes of illegitimate bi-racial children? and he didn't care if they were sold as slaves.
and Lincoln didn't want to liberate the slaves. He only did that as a desperate measure to ensure that the confederate did not split off from the U.S.
I am NOT American... yet I know this much about your history. wow!

No you are not a racist and someone who gets offended by your question is a racist. I'm black and I believe it is fine for you to have those kinds of thoughts. Let me put it to you this way: MLK jr had more things going against him than those other people. Death threats, bombs and all kinds of things. I'm not downgrading the works of the people you mentioned and I know that they had it hard too, but I believe MLK jr had it worse.

Tiffany,
Do you really want to know the truth?? Do the rest of you? MLK Day was created to keep the people in their place. That is right. This Day is purely a political move. Keep the small guy calm. Keep the common man amused, diverted, subdued, quiet, going nowhere, etc. Do you really want to get ahead of the rest of society? Guess, what. Money makes the world go 'round. Get an education. Make lots of money. Let the small man have their small dreams fulfilled. Go your own way. Then you will win.... white, black, asian, indian, whatever. the only real color that matters is the color of Money. Don't believe me?? try going out into the world with nothing and see who listens.... do yourself a favor and your future offspring and their future offspring. Hoard wealth and pass it on to your family. In the end they will win.

You are not a racist for asking. I see it as honoring someone who has contributed to the overall good of our society. We have Presidents day, we have Columbus Day, I think it is a good thing to honor someone who had a dream of equality for all people. I hope that one day we will be able to add 9/11 as a national holiday as many heros died on that day and should also be honored.

yes you are ....,so what? just your bringing up this topic is giving credence of a problem through implication or acknowledgment rather than settling for being a human which is the acceptable universal concept which excludes racism . so if you were to drop your last clinging grasp to racism you would say I have some human friends and the racism would have already been extinguished .I know you will have it torn from your dying racist fingers .hope for better though.
peace out

You bring up a good & valid point here. But I have learned to accept the fact the society views "holidays" in more of a monetary sense than anything else. You are not racist, by any stretch of the imaginatiion, for asking such a question.

Really, America celebrates "MLK Jr's birthday" as a national holiday?
I thought it was only the U.S.A which did that.
