It is supposed to celebrate diversity and progress... however, it seems to me, after attending many parades and festivals all over the country, the main participants are the outrageous drag queens, leather daddies, slaves on leashes and, the lesbians with black tape over their nipples...
So progress and diversity... at the cost of acceptance.
I have been out all my life. Nothing shocks me ...but, the majority of the people making a spectacle of themselves during Pride Week, are not a good example of the true Gay Community.

"Gay Pride" had its history in the marches done by the Mattachine Society from the 1940s until the Stonewall Riots of 1969. Held in front of Independence Hall on July 4th of every year the members of the MS would march and hold signs with statements about seeking equality for homosexuals. The MS actually won many important court cases prior to Stonewall (although most people have forgotten). After the Stonewall Riots, marches, more like what the MS had done than what we have today, were held in remembrance. As time went on instead of just remembering the Stonewall Riots and making statements about equality, the marches became picnics and parades and came to celebrate the entire "community".....but here in this sense the word community simply meant those who feel a shared sense of similarity. As time has gone on Gay Pride celebrations are more like a national holiday, retreat, for GLBT people (they have become GLBT Pride instead of just Gay Pride). The "Pride" is meant as a signal that you, the individual, are not ashamed of yourself. That you have decided not to live a lie, but instead choose to live with integrity and honesty by being yourself and not denying a part of who you are. The celebrations today seem to embrace a large diversity of those who are GLBT....Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, dark skinned, light skinned, immigrants to a nation, those born in the nation, people of many ethnicities, languages.
The celebrations have never been about what you do with your penis nor about how far we have come as a community. The celebrations are about celebrating who you are....as a whole. That's why so many people who plan the celebrations try so hard to get the word out and let people know that they want all those who are GLBT to participate in the celebrations and to display all of themselves. When I spoke to a committee about the satsang I help organize marching in the parade they were excited that a Hindu group of GLBT and GLBT-friendly people would want to march in the parade. When I told them I knew other groups that might be interested they were excited that we were taking an interest and weren't just wanting to represent only the GLBT aspect of ourselves in the parade, but instead a full expression of ourselves. One older gent said "finally a young person who understands what Pride celebrations are about.....celebrating ourselves as ourselves." Maybe we just have to stop and remind ourselves of that considering our crazy some place's celebrations can get (I live in the middle of the US so they don't get too crazy here).

Gay pride is taking pride in yourself and your community; in a perfect world. Parades and such have become somewhat towards looking at hotties.
As doing with your penis, go see the show "Penis Puppetry." It's hilarious.

Why in hell can't it do both? After all, without "willy" down there, you aren't a man, are you? You've always sounded like the Gay community is so "outside you," like your better than them. Well, get off your high horse. Not everyone can be "Lily White" like you are. Your just so condescending and nevermind, it just doesn't matter anymore.
