When your parents divorce, you keep the same name you've had all along. It's not necessary to change your name. Why would you want to?

Well, you sort of get to pick, if you have a parent who is willing to go through the legal process of getting your name changed. The fact of the matter is that your birth name, the name on your birth certificate, will stay the same, by default. It takes legal action to change it. This can be done, but the standard is that you keep the name you were given when you were born.

My parent's divorced before I was 2. I have my father's last name. A friend of mine whose parents recently divorced, she has her father's last name. Friend who went through a very bad divorce with a very bad father still carries her father's last name.
I think since it is on your birth certificate it is harder to change it in the result of a divorce.
Everyone I know has kept their birth name. Although, I am sure you could take your mother's maiden if you really really really wanted to. But what do you do if your mother remarries? Change your last name... again?
I think keeping your original name is most common and most convenient.

Your name does not change from the name you had when you were born. The only one who has an option would be the wife, who can petition the court to return to her maiden name. Otherwise, the kids' names don't change.

You keep the name that is signed on your birth certificate until you come of age enough to legally change your name.
