Put your music in iTunes and then connect up your iPod.

Don't iPods come with documentation anymore, when I got mine, it came with a nice book for of pictures. Was easy to learn to put music on it.

As for free music, if it is copyrighted music, and you get it for free, it is illegal.

First of all, you need to have the songs added to your music library on the iTunes program (just being in the My Music folder isn't good enough). The quickest way to do this is to Click and Drag the files in the iTunes window and it'll sort them out. Next, you need to create one or more playlists. Add songs from the iTunes library to the playlist(s) by Clicking and Dragging them from the Music section of the Library into the Playlist title on the left side of the iTunes window. Once you've done that, hook your iPod up to the computer. A new line should show up on the left that identifies your iPod (under Devices). Click on it. The main window should show a bunch of tabbed pages, so click on the tab that says Music. Check the Sync Music option, and then either select All Songs and Playlists, or select Selected Playlists and check any playlists that you want to load in the scroll box underneath. Once you've got everything checked and marked to your satisfaction, hit the Apply button in the lower right corner of the window.

From this point on, any songs that you add to any selected playlists will automatically load onto your iPod whenever you plug it into this computer. Also, any songs that you remove from those same selected playlists, and that are not located in any other playlist at the same time, will be deleted from your iPod whenever you plug it in. It's a bit tricky to get started compared to "just dump everything in" (like you get with some players), but once you start designing your own custom playlists (I've got five just for The Beatles' studio albums, and even a few seasonal ones) you'll never want to go back.

You go to "file" and click on "sync ipod".
As for getting FREE songs, thats illegal, but most people who dont care use limewire, but, at the same time, you are putting your computer at risk of viruses.
