Tide laundry soap, with out the bleach. 4 oz. per gallon of hot water. Mix well with water to dissolve all particles, any small pieces will plug up the machine. Make sure you go over the carpet several times extracting as much water as possible. The only bad part about these machines, they do not dry the carpet as fast as they should, and this is where problems can arise. To help speed up the drying, turn fans on, air circulating helps dry the carpet.

My husband also put a few drops of dishwashing liquid into hot water and swore by it cleaning ability. Careful not to use too much because you don't want to foam up the place, which will leave a residue and cause your carpet to get dirty faster this time around. I would spend the $10 and get the professional cleaner stuff that has directions.

Your best to go to a hardware store and pick up the right stuff plus the anti-foam solution.
