This is ridiculous..........I kept repeating those words, over and over again. This cannot be happening, it is against all the rules of physics, I cannot have travelled back in time. Yet, here I was with the memory of a sixty-six year old man in the body of a sixteen year old teenager. No, it's all a pack of lies. This time, I'll tell the whole truth.

I had gone over to Ireland for one of my nephew's wedding and found myself at a loose end whilst 'the gang', as I call my Irish family, were getting well and truly sozzled in the reception. I can enjoy the singing up to the point when my sister begins to go through her routine of 'Trisha the Stripper'. At her age, she should know better.

I went outside the hotel and found a seat down by the river where I made myself comfortable. A slow smoke from the pipe put me truly as ease and the Summer sunshine was making me dozy.

I looked around me and everything was hazy, the odd splash of a jumping trout was the only sound other than the bees in the nearby flower bed. Suddenly, without any warning, I was sixteen again and sitting by the old river close to home. On the other side of the river by the park, was Mary Kavanagh. My God, Mary Kavanagh, the truest and purest love I have ever known. When I called her, she lifted her skirt and waded across the river by the stepping stones.

As she flopped herself down beside me on the grass, and as I looked at her in amazement, all I could think of saying was 'Being this young again is........heaven'. Mary merely looked at me as if I had two heads. 'What do you mean Mike' she seemed puzzled 'you said this young again'. I was becoming confused myself. What on earth did I mean.

'I am not sure Mary' I quietly spoke to her 'but things seem to be well and truly mixed-up. How about that little ditty that you used to sing to me. How did it go'. Mary began 'A little dance. A little song. I've really missed you. It's been so long'. 'Mary' i called at her 'so you do remember'.

'Mary' I asked 'do you think it is possible for me to be much older in real life and to have come back in time to this age again'. 'Ohhh' she said with that beautiful smile on her face 'we're telling the truth are we, or are we telling fibs'.

'Unfortunately Mary' I suddenly felt sad 'it's a cold world out there. Sometimes I feel like I'm getting a little frosty myself'. 'Shush' said Mary, poking me in the ribs 'sure now, aren't you beginning to frighten me with your yarns'. 'Of course I'm only joking you Mary' I purposly lied, 'but aren't they only white lies'. 'You and your white lies Michael' Mary was in one of her scolding moods. Without warning, she threw her arms around me and kissed me tenderly on the lips. 'I don't want to hear any more of your stories. Do you hear me Michael' Mary appeared to be a little nervous.

'As always....you take my breath away Mary' I whispered to her, knowning in my heart of hearts what would become of me over the next fifty years. I felt sad but did not want to frighten her any more than I had already done.

'So there you are' it was Patricia. I was the one now confused. I looked around me and saw the river, the hotel and my clothing. I was back in the present after an all too brief visit back to my boyhood. It had all been a dream.

I wondered whatever happened to Mary. 'Patricia' I asked 'what ever happened to Mary Kavanagh that used to hang around home when we were young'. Patricia was taken aback and seemed shocked and surprised at the question. 'Janey Mac' she replied 'sure you are going back a fair bit aren't you. Sure she had eight kids, all lovely blonde ones'. I nodded for that was what I had expected. Patricia continued 'not only that but she must have at least fifty grandchildren and a couple of great-grandchildren now'. 'Who did she marry' I asked, not really wanting to know the answer.

Patricia did not answer and I knew her, she was pretending not to have heard the question. 'Come on Trish' I insisted 'who the hell did she marry'. Patricia sat down beside me on the bench and became very serious. 'You know Mick', she confided 'but back in those days it was very hard on an unmarried mother. She got a hard time since she never married. You know something' she asked 'I think she had a soft spot for you all her life, why don't you try to see her'.

'Trish' I replied 'you may not believe this, but I just did............'.

Wow Dean as always.... you take my breath away. I know that we have a lot to talk about. This time, I'll tell the whole truth but you have to be honest too. We have to talk about the fact that you bought me a beautiful opal diamond engagement ring, then took it back from me. We have to talk about the fact that a few weeks after we broke up you announced that you were gay.
Ohhh, we're telling the truth about everything tonight. You know I've missed a couple of things about you. A Little dance, a little song, I've really missed you. It's been so long. You know it's a cold world out there. Sometimes I feel like I'm getting a little frosty myself. I just really need to straighten things out with you because you hurt me so bad. You know I have to admit that being this young again is... heaven.
Oh well I will forgive you for what you did to me. I've moved on and so have you.
