I am traveling there in May, do they automatically give you a lei when you get off the plane or is that something you need to arrange in advance?

Hi. Congrats on your trip to Maui. You will have a ball. The lei's are given by family, friends, or the hotels- if you make arrangements ahead of time. You can check with the concierge at the hotel. (This, unfortunately, is usually only at the larger (and most expensive hotels.)
Are you going through a Tour Agent? Maybe they can help..
Good Luck, and trust me the lei will be One of the minor memories of your trip.
Be sure and arrange for Sunrise at Haleakala (Volcano) You'll have to get up at 2:30am to get up there. But trust me it is worth it!! Check out the Maui Activities magazines at all of the hotels - they will have ways to make arrangements for your trips.

When we went we got one as we where getting off the plane and when we got to the hotel. Have Fun!
