I am new to snails. I have a 50 gal aquarium that I have had for quite a while. All water levels are ok and the fish are doing fine. I bought the snail about 3 days ago and it sat on the bottom until today when it started floating around. I don't think it is dead because it doesn't smell bad but I wonder if it can attach to anything since it is floating.

You are really lucky that it hasn't started to stink yet. Get it out of your tank before it does, because it is quite dead.

Yeah, snails just float sometimes. I really couldn't tell you why. My apple snail does this every so often. There won't be any doubt if your snail is dead. You can test to make sure by taking him out of the water and holding him upside down for a second. If his body falls out, he's dead, otherwise his foot will still be acting as a 'latch'.

I don't think he would be floating with his body still inside the shell if he was dead anyway.

I had a snail for years and it used to do that all the time.It actually seemed to enjoy floating around the tank.Take it out of the water and place it in a plastic container for a few minutes along with a bit of water and a piece of lettuce and see if it comes out to eat. Also, snails REALLY smell bad when they are dead!

NO THE SNAIL IS NOT DEAD! it has an air bubble in the shell, my snails get it all the time. Should take up to a day to get rid of... Sometimes alittle long. PLEASE DONT GET RID OF YOUR SNAIL. The only way to tell your snail is truely dead is if the trapped door is not closing, or if it hangs out of the shell not moving at all even when you pick it up.

Can you see if the snail still has it's foot? I have a really bratty Dojo that loves playing snail-ball. if the snail has it's foot put it against the wall of the aquarium and see if it latches on. If it doesn't latch then drop it in the waste bin and try again.
