It does not have to be yours. My birthstone is ruby, but my favorite is aquamarine.

Mine is the Garnet, but my favorite is also Aquamarine. Light blue is just such a nice color.

My birth stone is Ruby, but I think Amethyst is a cool color. I painted a Car I had Deep Amethyst Pearl. It looked black but in the sun it was purple.
