Found the following informatoin on a barcelona tourist guide website that might be helpful:
The "dress code" in Barcelona is casual. Jeans and T shirts are normal attire and you will be able to enter practically all but the very exclusive restaurants with casual wear. The only exception are "Sleeveless T' shirts" which you will have a few problems getting into Bars and clubs. Some of the more expensive night clubs insist on shoes (no trainers) and will also not allow Sleeveless T shirts.
Also below is interesting article about how to blend in with locals and not stick out like a sore american thumb.
When I was in Madrid ages ago, I was told not to wear shorts,especially short ones. t-shirts, etc. I brought lots of skirts and nice tops. However Barcelona is a beach community so you should be OK, I would recommend longer bermuda style though. Spain loves to dress up. But keep this in mind, while Spain has come a long way in the last 20 years, it is still fairly conservative and fair religious.

there r soooo many outfits u could do with shorts
example: a pink baby-doll top with a pair of blue short-shorts would b soooo cute
Example: u could pair the same shorts with a bikini top while at the beach..... short-shorts r always fashionable
