Your DVD player may only be able to recognize DVD + R or DVD - R or IT might not be able to read DVD9, check you manual or the sony website, to see what formats and speeds of DVD's your player will accept.

Ther can be two different causes :
1) hardware failure. DVD drive have two separate lasers one for CDs and one for DVDs. If DVD one fails it can cause problem like that.
2) Software problem.

In order to test what is the problem I'm using bootable DVD - if computer boots from the dvd (you have to set boot order in BIOS) - the problem is with Windows - restoring to earlier restore point can help - or windows reinstall on top of the existing system (refreshes the files and replaces damaged ones).

You can also try to use different types of DVDs - data or movie. Sometimes default program for playing DVD content is damaged and freezes computer.

Your computer may be low on virtual memory or RAM. Try removing any unimportant files, programs, anything. Or wait for your computer to detect the matter and let it automatically expand memory from microsoft.com

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
