I'd say talk to him. The worst he can do is say ''I don't like you that way''. In all honesty, what ever he says won't kill you. Just be brave. Try sometime when he might need some help.
Do you have any of the same classes together? Try checking up on him during lesson. If he sits close, ask him if he's confused. Or if you see him drop a pencil or paper, pick it up and ask him if it's his. You know? Try to work some chit-chat in there.

That should not be a big deal for pete's sake, this is the US of A, tell him the way you feel, and make sure he does not take advantage of that...................you never know!
