The USA is not very likely to falter within the next 20-50 years and maybe even farther than that. However I would say that the countries most likely to take the top spot in world leading would be
a. Germany
b. United Kingdom
c. China
d. Norway
e. Russia
f. Sweden
Note: The United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, and Sweden are all part of the EU which means they will most likely collaborate in thier economic issues together.
Note: China is responsible for a majority of imports to the USA for cheap manufactured products for large companies such as Wal-Mart.
Note: Russia is a disbanded county that still has many problems after the break-up of the Soviet Union but slowly progresses to the state that it was in 20+ years ago.
Note: Norway and Sweden are both higher on the ladder of the Human Devolpment Index than the United States. The HDI is a special formula combining life expectancy, education and other assortments of social progress.
However if you are worried about the US not being the world leader as the only super-power I suggest you really stop worrying as I don't see a real change happening soon.

Or, you could ask...what country is 2nd. to USA right now? I really don't know. But if we went down, and we might if we don't improve our quality of and motivation for education, I would vote for China. I'm adding a note. Read in the newspaper today that China, Germany and France are all right behind us. Almost everyone's health care (for the majority) is better than ours (in western nations) as is life expectancy, and infant mortality rates.
We have the best military, not the biggest, but the best in terms of equipment.

well technically this is not possible assuming that thier GDp is itself bigger than the whole of EU or as they say that mono polar world is more stable... but other contestants like china and india are really not in the league to be considered , china with its 1 child policy would start facing demographic problems after the 2035, india on the other hand a long way to go , it has non existent infrastructure, minority based politics, problem with neighbours, brazil would never be able to reach the economic strength of USA due to non existent other forms of resources, or for that matter russia would be just 1/4 of america by population.
try to understand america is truely blessed as a nation be it in demographics , economics or natural resources and it is said that american GDP/Per capita by 2050 would be close to 80000 !!!! with a population of close to 400 million , just multiply the 2 and you would get the multitude...thier would be countries with higher standards of living but they wont have the economic or demographic clout which is very neccessary for power distribution.
