I haven't been able to get in touch with any job recruiters or headhunters because they claim there are none for journalism. Is this true? I am so desperate to get any job in my feild so I can work my way up, but I can't get that first job. I haven't even gotten more than 1 interview, and I've been applying for jobs for a year now.

Networking in the real world is always best. And don't forget to expand to related areas such as public relations and publicity director.

Meet lots of people, don't let yourself be discourage, and be persistent. Good luck.

A BIG part of being a journalist is being persistent and resourceful. Keep at it. Don't just rely on internet search engines. Have you tried contacting newspapers, magazines, PR companies, etc. directly? Have you tried showing up at their doorstep and asking if there are any open positions?

My sister-in-law constantly sends out her resume. Her master is in an obscure field - renaisance architectural planning- not an easy field to find a job. After sending out her resume for a year (in the mean time she works at Target) she finally found the pot of gold at the end of the tunnel (yes it was a deep dark tunnel, not a rainbow). She just got hired.

So, moral of the story... KEEP AT IT! Can you find a position as an intern and work a second job? This might help you get your foot in the door.

ALSO... you said you've only had one interview. That tell me there's something seriously wrong with your resume. Do you know anyone in the journalism field that could review your resume? If not, send me an email and perhaps I could review it for you. A good resume is the first step in getting a job.

Good luck.

Most of the print media is in a down turn and Airwave media needs pretty faces with their mouths full of @#&%
Journalism is under seige.
If you are really passionate about it, start your blog and establish your name before applying.
The best bet can be finding work with Corporate America in its PR, Marketing and any other department. Corporations are looking for people with diverse backgroud. It is the in thing. I work for a big one and the two most successful hires in finance are from liberal arts background.
