you cant make them at home, but you need silicon, silver (or gold) and and a lab equiped with machines of nanoelectronics. you can do that in IITs.

LOL, sorry dude but chips today generaly are made of gold lines sorrounded by platic or silicon to prevent them from crossing each outher. I laugh at the thought of making them because these chips are made with strands of gold only 65nm thick (thats 65 NANOMETERS). You need extremley precise and expensive equipment to make these chips, not to mention the shear knowledge that goes into designing the chip. Sorry, but I don't think to many people are going to be challenging Intel or nVidia anytime soon when it comes to chip making.

Isn't it nice to be green and naive? But I do give you credit for asking. It takes a lot, not only sand and $$$ but several other exotic materials and knowledge as well!

Go to Yahoo search and type Chip making or Chip manufacturing to get an inside picture of it.

Good luck.

lol dude, seems like u r in ur 1st yr engineering thats why these wierd aspirations...
making chips wud require extensive electrical knowledge, comp science knowledge, dsp knowledge, loads of patience..
ready access to some goldsmith to get the gold platting done with exact specifications, silicon(i guess pamela cud help u on that)..
N heavy and expensive machines for the fabrication..

so the cheapest wud be like crores of rupees..
my suggestion, drop the idea, dont do it, have mercy at the poor guys wrkin with intel, amd, philips etc..dont steal their daily bread..

nyways do ur engineering well, eventually, who knows, u might even be able to take up a job with the above mentioned chip R&D heavy weights n accomplish ur dreams....
good luck dude...

There is nothing cheap about making chips. It takes a $500k machine to do it. The cost must be offset with high volume sales. It's not for the hobbist.

potatoes soaked in water, then placed under high pressure steam vent to explode the skins off, then put down the barrel of a water gun and shot through a supersharp steel grill, then fried in oil and snap frozen with dry ice, then packaged and shipped. it is the same process whether your asking about potato chips or french fries.

Regarding computer chips, thin wires of gold attached to terminals that connect to the chip's "legs" to the motherboard, all of which is suspended in silicon and coated in plastic except the exposed legs. These gold wires also pass through a variety of functional compnents, including memory, filters, current flow regulators, frequency converters, code interpreters, cascades, etc, etc. It costs over $1 million in equipment to create 1 chip, whereas it costs $1.1 million to create 10 million chips. Then there is real estate, lisencing, shipping, suppliers, customers, advertising, lobbying, etc to consider.
