Exchange it while you're still in your warranty period. That's a bad sign.

It's basically a limited-use computer that runs a (comparably) primitive operating system (aka firmware). Whenever you've got programs loaded into RAM, there is always the possibility that the code that has been stored in memory will become corrupted (the "permanent" code that's saved to the hard-drive can too, but not nearly as easily as code stored in RAM), and whenever the system tries to run a chunk of code that has become corrupted it can't process it properly, and that's what'll usually cause it to seize up. Usually. I've also discovered another reason that it could seize up, which basically involves forgetting to grab the iPod out of your car during winter weather and letting it sit there in sub-freezing temperatures for over 24 hours (if you do accidentally do this, don't turn it on, and just let it sit in a warm room for a few hours and it should work fine afterwards, but it probably won't be able to completely load up the firmware before it seizes up if it still feels like it's straight out of the freezer).

The Nano is basically a simplified computer. It has a hard drive and an operating system. Like a computer, sometimes it freezes up so you have to "reboot" it like you would with a computer.

You might have too much stuff on it so maybe going through it and taking off songs you barely listen to would do the trick!
