Ok I want to buy a pet turtle & I need some help and some advice as well. It wont be for a few months but I am researching now so I can have a good idea of what I want & stuff. Anyway here are a few things I know that I am looking for:
* something small
* not a water turtle; I know they need some water but I
dont want an entire tank I like land turtles better.
* nothing too expensive

If anyone has any suggestions or anything please comment :]

they are not very affectionate at all but can be handled without biting. I have 3 turtles (have had them for 4 years now) and they've grown quite big. They are red earred terapin turtles. I've got them when they were just babies. Anyway, affectionate towards me, not even once. You can pick them up and handle them no problem but they show no signs of affection. They are neat to have though. Especially when they hunt. They are in a 80 gallon tank with plastic clay rocks to rest on so when I put in some feeder fish, they go hunting! its really cool... Sorry, getting a bit off topic but unfortunately, the answer is no.

In the box turtles, avoid the Ornate box (Terrepena ornata)- it is a little tricker than the other common pet boxes.

The Eastern (Terrepena carolinia) is an attractive species that is pretty easy to deal with once you get the high humidity taken care of. Three-toes (T. o. triungus) are pretty good in captivity.

Don't collect a wild one- it is illegal in most states, and they do not adjust well to captivity. If you see one on the road just move it to the other side and let it alone.

I say terrapin. I had one for 2 or 3 years.

I also had a box turtle for like a week. I didn't keep him long because at the time I already had 2 terrapins and a baby water turtle. But if I had to suggest something to you, it'd definitely be a terrapin. I'm not sure where you could get one or price on them because I found mine in my backyard. Hope that helps some.

I have a russian tortoise...he is about 6-7 inches long. They run about $100.

Keep in mind that most of these animals require a specific set-up which is not cheap. You need a pretty good size enclosure (55 gallon is minimum), Full spectrum UV light, heat, and substrate to start. You will also need to spend about $20-$40 a month on food.

Ash, here is a couple of links for you to check out.. Some say that the box turtle is not a very easy turtle to keep. These links may help you with a decision...

My little box turtle was about $20 when I got her. She's in a big fish tank, pebbled flooring with a green mat, a water dish to play in, and two basking lamps, one red for the night, and one white for the daytime.

Go with a box turtle- thousands are hit by cars on roads every year. Save yourself the expense of buying one and just pick one up on the road. Just make sure you dont cause an accident doing it.

ummmm jaden B has no idea what he is talking about. Box turtles should be good as long as you make sure to take proper care of it.

I have 4 desert turtles- and they are small- they are presently hibernating in the backyard- they eat the grass and the bugs- they will come out in spring- in am in s. NM- we feed them lettuce, fruit, veg and sometimes meat when they come out- they are quiet and had babies- and hid them well-they hide in the hedges and burrow a bit- easy maintenance-D
