They don't all have a city named Springfield. But as far as "why" goes, the first Springfield in the US was in Massachusetts. According to Wikipedia: The settlement was originally named Agawam Plantation, but in 1640 it was renamed Springfield after the village near Chelmsford, Essex in England where William Pynchon, then the assistant treasurer of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was born. Springfield, MA is also the largest city named Springfield in the U.S., so perhaps that is why other cities followed.
