My boyfriend just bought a 2001 Hyundai Tiburon today. But now he has that little keypad thing to turn an alarm on and off. Nice idea. But he kind of has a history of locking his keys in the car (puts him in his pocket and they fall out, or something). The alarm automatically turns on by itself after 60 seconds if he doesn't turn it on with the keypad. So I was wondering if he could get a spare key made to give to his parents. But would he be able to use it to get into the car if the alarm is enabled?

It seems kind of pointless to even HAVE a key if you can't use it to get into the car, so it only seems logical that it should work, but things don't always work out logically...

Has anyone tried this or know if it works? Or do you have to have the keypad to turn the alarm off? (He only has one of the key pads by the way).

Thanks!

You can open my Mercedes with the key. It sets off the alarm, but it goes off when you start the car.

If he has locked the transmitter in the car, just open the door with the spare key, then turn the alarm off with the transmitter. I know the alarm goes off for a few seconds, but that shouldn't matter.

Not sure about Hyundai's, but I've owned several vehicles with factory installed security systems. All of them would disable the alarm if the key was used to open the door. They have a switch on the back of the cylinder that turns it off when the cylinder is turned to unlock it.

Best way to find out is to open it with the key without disarming it with the remote. It will let you know pretty quick if it doesn't disable it :)

It sounds like the key has a computer chip in it. You cannot get a key made at a normal key copying place. You will have to go to a Hyundai dealer and order a key for it using your VIN number, which is usually on the drivers door or near the drivers side of the windshield when viewed from the outside.
