i'm currently using AVG but can't download the new version because i'm running windows (ME) not XP, can anyone recommend another free one that i can download without fear of downloading a virus or something in the process

I can give a few links that offer free virus and spyware removers...!You may be having a virus or spyware installed on your PC. Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at

Windows Me was one of the worst and most unstable versions of Windows to hit the market. Which is why it was quickly discontinued.
Do yourself a favor. Get Windows XP or better yet get a new PC that is already running XP (since if your running Me your current PC must be horrible). Then get a real antivirus like Symantec or Trend Micro. I wouldn't place my trust in the free ones. Free = less money to stay on top of things.

AVG is really good. Just go to AVG.com and download. Best ones
are: AVG Free Edition & AVG Anti-spyware 7.5. Hope this helps.

I can't think of any free anti virus software, but try purchasing McAfee, they're the best, provides you with a firewall, blocks alot of spyware.It's way better than Norton.

First look at the response from "Friendly Yahoo Spammer" and how often he/she reassures you...people who constantly tell me how perfect a deal is and assure me they are not lying make me uneasy. Also, spam is the enemy of most of the people I know who use the Internet, and this person incorporated it in his/her screen name...just a few thoughts.
My DSL provides free anti-virus, anti-spy, parental controls, and pop-up blocker. Not only is the price right but the customer support is the same for my DSL, main email accounts, and virus protection.

i use AVG, its free and easy to use. But, there really is no "good" free anti-virus software. But check AVG out, works for me!

I am running XP professional (SP2) and Windows 98SE and I use Antivir from freeav. It is free for life! It is compatible with 98SE, me and xp. Find it at http://www.freeav.com and select the version that you want to go with your OS.

Avast works on ME and Windows 98: I have never had a problem with it at all and It's free. Symantic will slow your computer down.
