The Morning after pill works by preventing a fertilized egg cell from implanting, or attaching to the lining of the uterus. the actual mechanism of this is still not fully understood.
"emergency contraceptives" like Plan B do not cause an abortion. Rather they prevent a baby from developing past fertilization. (which happens most of the time anyway.)
Drugs like Plan B are usually about 90-95% effective, if taken within about 72 hours after the fact. They may be less effective than other types of birth control, and should not be relied upon.
Emergency contraceptives are controversial, because some activists argue that a fertilized egg, or "embryo" becomes a human being the moment it is fertilized. It is therefore wrong to deny it a chance at life. I personally feel this is a problematic argument though, because it implies that the egg is somehow "not human" before it is fertilized; a rather meaningless distinction. This of course depend on what you believe, and the choice is up to you.
