As soon as you said: "over a period of time", then I knew your problem was not RAM but more than likely heat or a power supply. The plane and simple fact is, if RAM is bad you will 85% of the time know it right away. RAM might be your problem but my gut says it is heat or your power supply. The easiest one to address first is the heat issue. You might need to pop open your case and install a fan or blow a small fan into your open case. I know that is aesthetically unappealing but you need to cool your computer. Sorry but many vender's do not do a good job of allowing for heat. After cooling your computer and your computer is still acting funny then you will need to address your power supply. That is the unit you plug your computer into in back. I know this might sound daring but replacing a power supply is very easy. You unplug everything inside and take off the 4 screws in back of your case and you replace it with a new one of 450 watts or more. If you own a Dell then you must buy your power supply from them as they have rewired theirs to not work with the standard market computers. Hope I helped and good luck.

Yes actually, there is, and it was smart of you to ask.
Memtest86+ (http://www.memtest.org/) is the most common and leading free memory testing utility that is OS independent. That means that your software/spyware/adware or anything like that cannot interfere with the test results.
You will need a CD burner and a blank CD or at least a floppy diskette to use it. I would also recommend running it overnight, as unless it is a serious problem it will need hours to detect an error.
1. Get the iso image from http://www.memtest86.com/memtest86-3.0.iso.zip
2. Inside that zip file is a file named memtest86-3.0.iso
3. Extract that file to disk and burn it as an image using your CD burn program.
Nero Instructions (not Nero Express or any other way), but the Nero interface -
1. In the main interface (titled "Nero Burning ROM"), click on File->Open
2. Browse within Nero to the folder containing memtest86-3.0.iso
3. Change "Files of type:" to "Image Files [*.nrg, *.iso, *.cue]"
4. Double-click on memtest86-3.0.iso, make sure "Write" and "Finalize CD" are selected, and burn.

I use Memtest.
"MemTest is a RAM reliability tester that runs under Windows. It evaluates the ability of your computer's memory to store and retrieve data accurately. A correctly functioning computer should be able to do both these tasks with 100% accuracy day in and day out. A computer that fails these tests, perhaps because of old hardware, damaged hardware, or poorly configured hardware, will be less stable and crash more often. Even worse, it will become even less stable over time as corrupted data is written to your hard disk."
"By running MemTest you can ensure that your computer's RAM is correctly functioning...."

Do a search in your help and support program of your computer. Search for memory diagnostic programs. Widows already has a memory diagnostic.

memory sticks do not necesarrily go bad, but as you go on using the computer it stores info taking bits and bits of space from the memory so when next time you open a program or document you already loaded in that seesion it opens much faster.
