For your average tropical aquarium fish, that's a pretty decent lifespan. Not common perhaps, but they should live that long if well cared for.
If by coldwater, you mean goldfish, their average lifespan in home aquariums is way lower than that so you did well!
Unfortunately, I say that because most people don't take proper care of their goldfish and they die within months. Actually, even with the best care, some won't live longer than what yours did because they are handled so carelessly before they are sold to you.
Goldfish properly cared for can and should live a long time, up to 20+ years. Several have lived as long as 40 years. I found several references online to a koi in Japan over 250 years old (!!)

I will assume you are talking about comet goldfish or "feeder" fish.
A goldfish will live on average 20-25 years if kept of properly. However, in most conditions goverened by the masses today, that number is greatly reduced because of poor aquarium set ups if the goldfish is lucky enough to be put in an aquarium at all
or if they are owned by an idiot and put in a bowl).
You normally don't see these type of fish living more than a few years. You are very fortunate (and hopefully a good fish keeper) to have kept your fish alive this long. However, by your not knowing for sure, I'm going to go with you were just lucky.

That's pretty good, especially where it may have had an additional 1-3 years on it already from when you bought it (unless you're taking that into consideration). In goldfish years, taking into consideration how most people take care of goldfish, which is deplorable, this is a long time. But, what it means more than anything is that you took good care of him. Thank you for being a responsible pet owner.
