For me omiyage (お土産) should be lightweight and easy-to-pack.
My fabourite omiyage from Japan is all Japanese snacks, many many types of Pocky in 7-11 or any supermarket. I like them!!
Also go to second-hand shop for cheap music CD and video games.
And how's about cute keyholder, beautiful traditional fan and variety of chopsticks ;)
Like the above answer, don't forget to check out cheap product at 100YEN shops!! I found many nice preduct there, even it takes time, he he.

I just spent a couple of days in Tokyo - what a blast. I would bring back some of the cell phone charms. They are everywhere! Friends of mine who don't have phones put them on their key chains. The other thing I found was in the Yokohama station food hall. They are cookies shaped like doves. Really good! Actually, any of the items in the food hall are worth it. Some common items, like rice crackers, are packaged so beautifully - they make a great gift! Have fun ~ I am very jealous!

For something very Japanese, that is cheap and light, is a DARUMA. You know, those things that you color in one eye, and then you make a wish, then when the wish comes true, you color in the other eye. I got them for several of my friends and they loved them. Another idea is a HAPI coat. I little more expensive, but nice traditional gift that says JAPAN! A lot of girls in the US I know love the Japanese stationary because they are so beautiful and ornate.
Good luck!

You could buy cheap souvenirs from Daiso the 100yen shop, or yukatas for your friends and family. Or pray at a temple and buy their amulets for your loved ones.
As for yourself, you should get for yourself a bag from blue label burberry as it's cheap.
Or, buy clothes or shoes from BAPE, as that shop is very exclusive.
Do you like animes, or mangas? Maybe you can go to animate and buy character goods and cds?
Or go to Akihabara to shop for electronics, PS3, PS2, DS Lite??
Or buy 2nd hand PS1, 2 or PSP games?
Myself, i like to shop for such things when I'm in Japan.

My sister lives there and when she returned, she brought back little, inexpensive trinkets that make for nice decoration. They also have the best junk food I have ever tasted there. Definitely get as much snacky stuff as you can. =]
