Kaspersky, nod32 and bitdefender are three of the highest rated antivruses based on what they detect. I would suggest avoiding norton avery time I have used it it has slowed down my PC and i is a pain to remove.
I used to use AVG till I looked at some of the test results and found out it missed a lot of viruses. I now use antivir its till free has decent detection but nags once a day to get a full premium version.
I am upgrading to vista so will be looking for an antivirus that works on that and may actually pay for one

Kaspersky, cause it gets the highest ratings by computer professionals in anti virus protection tests. Zonealarm 7.0 (not yet released) has integrated this antivirus engine into their firewall suit... basically it will be the greatest deal ever known to mankind.
Don't listen to these noobs, Norton's antivirus, blows. Take it from an IT professional, them saying Norton's antivirus is the best makes me laugh.

Norton Antivirus is the best. Norton gives the best all-around protection, including virus protection, spyware, and security for your personal information. The antivirus always updates regularly, so your computer will be protected. Also, Norton is not as easily compromised like McAfee, which is a poor excuse for an antivirus.

AVG Free is the best.

2 Because it upates every day.
3 Because it works.

AVG, it doesn't hog resource like the crappy Norton AV does, its just as effective as all the rest.
Oh and its free - you dont even have to steal it :)
EDIT: Shawn is sooooo right, Norton blows big time, in fact I'd go as far to say that Norton sucks donkey balls.

Another vote for Norton here. Update is easy and you can renew online in a few minutes after a year.

I have found AVG Free best as when I installed it it found 2 viruses that my up to date MacAfee missed.
Also there are regular updates which are also free.
