It wasn't cheap, but the tag instructions say I can wash it, but I don't want to ruin it. Should I take the chance and try it, or pay the $125 the dry cleaners will charge me?

Eventhough the tag instructions say it's okay to wash it, it might be a bit risky. But I wouldn't pay $125 to have it dry cleaned.
If the manufacturer states that it's safe to wash, and you do, and it turns out badly, the manufacturer should reimburse you for it, otherwise the label would have read, "dry clean only."

I have a micro-suede comforter and I have washed it 3 or 4 times. It works best in a large machine, as it needs to move around. If the machine is big enough (and preferably a front loader), you should be able to wash it on a regular setting. If it just fits in your washer, then I would choose delicate, although it won't come out as clean. You can throw it right in the dryer. I put 3 tennis balls in with mine, to keep the fluff evened out. It does take considerable time to dry, and you have to take it out and reposition it, because the inside areas will not dry.

Micro-suede washes very well, use cool water and remove from the washer as soon as it stops to avoid setting wrinkles in the fabric.

I agree with queenbee, however I use woolite on delicate. If it is really dirty just let the washer mix it up for a few minutes, then stop it and let the comforter soak for 30 to 60 minutes before you continue the cycle.
Dry on low heat, and reposition often.

No manufacturer will not give stupid advice that might ruin the item so go with what their label says-=if it does not indicate washing normal or gentle,go with the gentlle-their reputation is on the line (scuse the pun.)
