It is called the "at" sign, and is used as such.

For example: e-mail address: john@email.com = john "at" email.com. On signs: 2 pairs @ $3.50/each etc.

10 apples @ $3.00 ea. is 30.00 - it is used to mean the word "at", same as in e-mail addresses (joe@domain)

It is actually "at".
However,I like to use it as "about" for short hand.
