Why do kickers punch the end of the football into the ground?

I noticed before a kickoff from a tee a kicker will punch one end of the football into the ground before he places it on tee. Does anyone know why they do this?

My boyfriend says to make the ball sit better in the tee... I think it
is just one of those things boys do to look cool! lol
