I hope you have separated partitions or hard drives for your operating system and data. If so, reinstall your system and select "format this partition using NTFS file system" if you are using win XP.

A dirty volume is when you have used for long your computer without reformatting your drive. Data gets corrupted and the computer slows down awfully. Try to defragment from within your system selecting your drive on the windows explorer, right click to get the menu "properties" and look for the "disk tools" tab, select "defrag disk" and if it says it cant be done but you can program it for later, accept it and reset your computer.

The reason your scan disc keeps stopping and restarting is because a program is running in the background. Two things you can do. Shut down all programs. Which can be hard if you have programs running that you don't know are running. Like Norton, or whatever security system you have. The easiest way is to restart your computer in "Safe Mode". Then defrag your computer in safe mode. If you don't know how to restart in safe mode, then follow these steps. Restart your computer. As the computer starts booting back up, hit the "F8" button and hold it down until you hear a continuous tone. Release the button, the screen will go black and then a list will appear. Chose the number that's next to "Safe Mode" and hit enter.

Boot computer keep pressing F8 untill it comes with a menu up start computer Normal, move up to start computer in safe mode hit enter

let it start in safe mode

then click start, programs, accessories, system tools,
do a disk clean up, (first)
