There's quite a bit of controversy over this question, because it's been believed for a very long time now that popping your knuckles causes arthritis and a number of other problems. If you understand the anatomy of the phenomenon, you can see there's very little in it that would harm you. Basically, you are releasing little air bubbles that build up in the cartiledge in your joints. It's not bad, it won't hurt you, and it won't make your knuckles swell. *smile* Hope that helps!

I've popped my knuckles for at least 20 years now, and they aren't any bigger.

I requested my health practitioner this and the answer isn't any, it does not. The popping that you hear is led to by technique of fluid and some gases being released between your joints, the fluid and gas ultimately comes again into the joint at a later time, it really is the reason you are able to pop your knuckles again quarter-hour later.

There is no air in your knuckles. They "pop" because your joint is full of synovial fluid, and when you do that the joint separates, creating a vacuum bubble. The popping sound comes from the creation of that vacuum bubble, which disappears when you let go of your knuckles.
Popping them isn't good, because it loosens you tendons, which increases your risk for dislocation and injury to the joint from excessive 'play'.

No. That's an old wives tale. All it does is release air and pressure built up in the joints. However, the friction caused by doing in may contribute to arthritis later on.

It may not make them bigger but can cause arthritis later in life which can deform the bones of the hand and cause swelling of the joints.

I believe it will cause arthritis. If the air in your knuckles is natural why would you want to release it?

If done enough, yes....you are causing damage and scarring to the synovial cavities and will be susceptible to crippling arthritis at a MUCH younger age.

No it doesn't however if you do it too much you will eventually cause damage to the joints because the ligaments will rub them and reduce the amount of sonovial fluid on the joint.
