Okay, my mom got me this great dell laptop for christmas. I needed it for school and all. I now have the wireless internet and everything. It rocks and all, but she told me she reserves the right to take my laptop and go through anything on it. And she has the administrator account. As if I am some kind of criminal. I don't do drugs and I have never been in major trouble. I am 16 and she thinks that she has the right to take it anytime to go through anything. I have no privacy.

Everyone needs privacy, explain to her how you feel about her doing those things, tell her you apperciate that she`s cares for you so much, but you need some privacy and some personal space hopefully she will understand and give you just that

Hard question. My sister is 16 and we share the laptop. It's hard when I want to take it because then she starts to complain. I must admit that sometimes I go through her pictures. With so much that they show on the news I only worry and get scared that the girl on the news could one day be my sister. It's not that I don't trust her, I don't trust the creeps that are on-line. I think your mom is trying to protect you and keep you safe. If she takes the laptop when you need to do something important, I would advise to save up for your own laptop.

You are a minor and living in her house. She is responsible for anything you do, legally or otherwise. Parents need to be aware of what their children are doing online. I doubt if she will look into everything you do, but for her to check every now and then just tells you that she cares and wants to keep you safe.

Unfortunately, as a parent, I think very close monitoring of a teen's Internet activity is neccesary in today's world. There are so many creeps out there in Internetland and she's trying to protect you from them. It may not be "fair" but it's good parenting.

Yes...her house, she owns the computer while you lie there and pays the internet bill. Want your privacy? Also everything you "own" is hers until you are 18.

Besides she may have down loaded spy ware on it and you would never know.

If you are that worried buy your own damn computer.

Your mom just cares about you and wants to protect you. She's probably watched Dateline like the rest of us and is afraid that even though you've been a great kid she is giving you access to a whole new world. Prove your self and everything will be okay.

Wel,, you may not deem it fair, but you know what? No one ever said life was fair. As long as you live in her home, you have to play by her rules. Just keep it clean until you're 18, then you can move out and enjoy your privacy.

Some parents are like that and can be a little too strict, but I'm sure she won't be so serious about checking it if you just don't do anything bad on it and prove it to her she'll stop checking after a while

And you would never look at nasty porn? I think it is a bit extreme, but if you are doing anything wrong, you know she is legally responsible right? I think it is only fair that she gave you such an expensive and potentially dangerous item that she police it. If you don't like it, give it back.

BOO HOO HOO. She bought the thing, I am assuming SHE is paying for the wireless connection, so yeah, that's her right. Just think, if it wasn't for her shelling out all that money, you would have NO laptop. Just be glad you HAVE one for God's sake. Until you move out and get a job, you gotta play by their rules, especially if they are footing the bills.
