Is it a physical response to stress in case; a physical defense mechanism?

well lets see.
its is our common instinct.
the nose and the eyes are connected by a small opening .
when tears fill the eyes the over flow some times goes to the nose.
you can see the opening if you look care fully.
just block your nose and try to breath out of the blocked nose and you will feel a cool breeze in your eyes.

Your tear ducks are connected to your sinus cavity which is connected to your esophigus (throat). When you cry your tear ducks put a chemical into your eye causing it to water. It is intended to flush foreign bodies out of the eye but stress can trigger it as well. Some of the chemical when secreated into the eye also is secreated into the sinus cavity causing the same reaction. your sinus's build up mucas.

tear ducts- water runs down them and drains in your nose- your eyes, ears, nose, and mouth are all connected. My friend could blow smoke out of her eye sockets. That was pretty gross and probably not a good thing for her eyes.
