I have had luck with both peanut butter and cheese. The real trick is not to leave such a big piece of bait that the mouse can nibble without setting off the trap. Like the responder who presses it into the spring, I use two pencil point size pieces pressed tightly into the trap release lever.

The best way I have tried was a crunched-up cracker and peanut butter mix. Within 30 minutes, i caught 3 mice!

they say Peanut Butter because that is like CRACK to rodents. Mice rats squirrels they cant stay away after many years of trapping those fuzzy tail rats with good PR (squirrels) i can attest to this fact.
