What do you mean, you're "too scary" to be one? You mean they think IT'S too scary?

Don't worry about that kind of talk. Focus on what YOU'RE interested in. For anything in law enforcement, you should concentrate on science and math, but at age 14, just keep doing well in all your courses. In college, take courses in criminology and psychology (and even in business administration - police departments need people who can RUN them too).

Good luck!

I think it is admirable that you think you know what you want to do for a career. I hope it is true....some people know what they want to do at a very early age, and others have no clue, even into their 20's. Some even get college educations, then find out that they hate what they majored in.

Here is my advice....as far as police/detective or csi, why don't you look on your county/city's website. Many have public days in which you can visit their precinct (basically it is open to the public). They may even have some outreach or volunteer opportunities in which you can really see if this is what you'd be interested in. Plus this type of experience shows later in life (at 18 when you get a job or goto college, or even at 22 as a college grad) how you've made sure and gotten exposed to this type of job. Find out how your local policemen became policemen...ask them how they'd go about doing it.

Plus there is always the web...do your research!

If you find out, in the long run, this isn't what you want to do...at least you can say that you went into your decision educated and won't question yourself later.

You need to arm yourself with sufficient information to make a decision. Research the occupation for the education and experience needed to reach your goals. Find out what the job environment is like, and consider safety concerns. Talk with people in the field to get their opinions and advice, or perhaps 'job shadow' someone. You are right, you have a lot of time to think about this, and it is likely that you will change your mind multiple times. That's okay too. Research any job ideas that come into your head. Otherwise, you could miss out on your dreams that could have become reality.

It is always good to have a goal in life, even though your ideas may change as you get older. I'm not sure why you say that people think you are "scary". I think you should not allow people to influence you one way or another unless you think the advice is coming from someone trustworthy. Hold onto your dream, but be prepared to be flexible too.

Do not give up your dream just yet! You may be very suited for police or lab work when you become an adult and be of great service to your community.

Just remember that real life situations are quite different from TV shows. For example, the police officers who go out to the crime scenes to investigate do not do much work in the labs or the morgues. They leave it to the scientists and the lab technicians, who in turn, rarely get to go to the crime scenes. When they do, it's strictly to collect physical samples and not to investigate.

You may be dreaming about some jobs that exist only on TV and not in real life. In real life, the work is seldom as exciting as on TV and the investigation rarely, if ever, get completed in less than an hour as on TV. It's tedious work that takes months and years and sometimes, never.

You have a lot of time to make a decision about what you want. Don't change your mind based on others. It only matters what you think! Try reading books on the careers that interest you. If you start preparing now, you will be light years ahead of your competition. Best of Luck!!!

OH sweetie, don't change your mind just because of what of others think. You should always follow your heart. It will lead you in the right direction. If you want to be one of those things, go for it. It is your life, live it for you, no one else! Good luck.

SWEETIE IF THAT WHAT YOU TRUELY WANT TO BE THEN GO FOR YOUR DREAMS, BE THAT, DON'T LET OTHER PEOPLE STOP YOU. FOR BEING WHAT YOU WANT. JUST BECAUSE THEIR DREAMS DIDN'T COME TRUE DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOURS WON'T. SO MY ADVICE GO STRAIGHT AHEAD FOR CSI, COP, OR DETECTIVE, JOB, YOU CAN DO ANYTHING THAT YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO. GOOD LUCK. REMEMBER ITS YOUR LIFE, YOUR CHOICE NOT THEIRS.

I think you can do anything you put your mind to. My four year old daughter told me she wants to be a doctor so I call her doctor Kayla. Just find something you like and stay focused.
