How about a diesel? Doesn't use ANY gasoline. But there is no best engine for saving gas, since you didn't spec the application. Is it for a generator? Commuter car? Moving van???? Have to know these things to make a determination. And just saying a tiny 4-cyl is the best is absolutely stupid. How much gas you think it would take for a little carbureted 4-cyl to get a 4000lb vehicle to 60 mph, versus and injected 8-cyl? There is no best engine for everything. Need to know specifics in order to answer this question accurately.
